Used Golf Club Condition Guide: What to Expect

Understand what each used golf club condition rating means. Learn the difference between Like New, Very Good, Good, and Acceptable conditions and what to expect.

When buying used golf clubs, the condition rating is the single biggest factor affecting price. Here's what each rating actually means and what to expect.

Condition Ratings Explained

New Brand new, never used. Still in original packaging with all accessories. Prices are typically 5-15% below retail since there's no warranty from an authorized dealer.

Like New Used once or twice with virtually no signs of wear. May have been a demo club or barely used gift. Expect minor handling marks at most. Performance is identical to new.

Typical discount vs. new: 15-30%

Very Good Regular use with minor cosmetic wear. Expect light scratches on the sole and crown, minor wear on the face, and some grip wear. All functional features work perfectly.

Typical discount vs. new: 30-45%

Good Moderate use with visible cosmetic wear. Expect scratches, sky marks (on drivers), moderate face wear, and worn grips that may need replacement. The club still performs well but shows its age.

Typical discount vs. new: 40-60%

Acceptable Heavy use with significant cosmetic wear. May have dents, dings, heavy scratches, and very worn grips. Still functional but showing considerable wear. Best value for budget-conscious golfers who prioritize performance over appearance.

Typical discount vs. new: 55-75%

Does Condition Affect Performance?

For most golfers, the answer is: barely. Unless a club has structural damage (cracked face, bent shaft), a used club in "good" condition will perform within 1-2% of a new one. The main differences are:

  • Grooves: Wedge grooves wear down and affect spin. For wedges specifically, condition matters more
  • Driver faces: Minor sky marks and scratches don't affect ball speed or launch
  • Irons: Face wear is cosmetic up to a point. Deep groove wear can affect spin
  • Putters: Almost never affected by condition. A well-used Scotty Cameron putts just as well as a new one

Our Recommendation

For the best value, look for clubs in Very Good or Good condition. You'll save 30-60% compared to new while getting a club that performs nearly identically. Save the "Like New" premium for putters and wedges where grooves matter most.
